A
Win for Vaccination
26.Jan.2005
One issue that is of the greatest importance to us here at
Mystery Investigators is that of vaccination. Many of us are
too young to remember going to school and seeing children
in callipers because their legs are deformed, the result of
polio. Many of us have never lost a brother or sister to whooping
cough or diphtheria. This means that we are ignorant of the
dangers these preventable diseases.
A couple of years ago I was hit with whooping cough. I was
surprised when I was sitting on the edge of my bed when I
found that I was unable to take a breath. Since I’m
a clarinet player I have good breath control so I sat there
without panicking and waited for the spasm to stop. When I
heard the whooping sound of my next breath I recognised the
symptom immediately. I did not have a severe dose of whooping
cough. Fortunately I had been vaccinated as a child but the
effectiveness wears off after many years. I caught it from
my daughter Gillian who was 13 at the time. She had a dose
of whooping cough that was so mild that we didn’t recognise
it. Gillian had caught it at school from other students who
had been unvaccinated.
If you have ever seen our Science Show you would know that
I am a martial artist and an athlete. Yet whooping cough affected
my breathing and general health for many months. The night
before I realised that I had whooping cough I was sitting
with a friend who the next day was going to visit his newly
born grandson in hospital. WHOOPING COUGH KILLS BABIES.
Every little one in that maternity unit had been put in danger
because of failure of people to vaccinate their children.
Today I saw a news release announcing that Bill Gates has
pledged $750 US million to vaccinate children throughout the
developing world, one of the largest donations ever. The contribution
to the international Vaccine Fund will help fight diseases
such as diphtheria, whooping cough, measles, polio and yellow
fever in 72 nations. This is not the first time Bill Gates
has donated such a large sum. The World Health Organisation
credits Gates' first $US750 million with helping to save 670,000
children's lives since 2000.
Bill Gates has shown that he has qualified to be known as
a true humanitarian.

The Mystery
Investigators are always
on the look out for evidence of the paranormal. With so many
people claiming amazing powers, it's a wonder the $1,000,000
on offer for proof of the paranormal in USA and the $110,000

things, talk with the dead!
A quick search on Google finally answers that great question,

Sensing
Murder? - We
Doubt It!
For the sake of TV ratings, network 10 are insulting
the families of the murdered and belittling the science of
criminal investigation that really does solve crimes.
It is very worrying to see the TV series, Sensing
Murder, making a comeback on Australian TV. The show
uses ‘Psychics’ to try and crack unsolved murders
from various times in the past. Only one episode was made
on the 7 network before the show was poached by rival network
10.
But why the fuss? Why not make a show about unsolved murders
and the supernatural? It’s because ‘Psychics’
have never solved a crime (using their ‘psychic’
powers), let alone a murder.
The great damage that this show will do, apart from giving
false hope to the families of the unfortunate murder victims,
is to promote the idea that ‘Psychics’ can and
do help the police by using their magic powers.
In fact, ‘Psychics’ are more of a plague, mainly
hounding the families of missing children and never, not once,
giving police the vital information to solve the crime or
find missing persons. ‘Psychics’ also waste valuable
police time and resources.
Mystery
Investigators go International!
Alynda and Richard, the Mystery Investigators, have returned
from their first trip to
New Zealand. Their stage show, “That’s
a Good Question” was a hit at the New Zealand
Skeptics’ Convention held in Christchurch. The team
are now planning a tour of New Zealand schools in 2005.
